Understanding ADHD

Better understanding attention-deficit disorder

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects the ability to concentrate, organize, manage time and regulate impulses and emotions. It does not disappear in adulthood: many people receive a first diagnosis in adolescence or adulthood, often after years of unexplained difficulties.

Living with undiagnosed ADHD can affect studies, work, relationships and self-esteem. The good news is that a rigorous evaluation makes it possible to put a name to these challenges and open the door to concrete strategies and, if needed, treatment.

At SM.PRIVÉ, the evaluation is led by general practitioners and combines an in-depth clinical interview with standardized tools. Our approach is medical, humane and non-judgmental, to support you toward a calmer everyday life.

Additional information about the consultation

  • A clinical interview and a physical exam will be performed.
  • Unlike an evaluation by a neuropsychologist, dyscalculia and dysorthographia will not be addressed.
  • Treatment for ADHD may be prescribed if the diagnosis is confirmed. However, if you have a history of, or your interview reveals symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions, treatment may be directed differently.

Frequently asked questions

What you need to know

What is the difference between a medical evaluation and a neuropsychological ADHD evaluation?
Health professionals assess ADHD using clinical interviews and standardized tools. Neuropsychologists offer in-depth cognitive testing but do not prescribe medication. SM.PRIVÉ uses a medical approach led by general practitioners.
What type of health professional will follow me?
Your evaluation and follow-up are provided by one of our general practitioners experienced in mental health. We do not offer psychology or neuropsychology services at the clinic.
Can the ADHD evaluation be done online?
Yes, the evaluation can be done online. However, a physical exam must be performed beforehand.
Can I get my lab tests done at SM.PRIVÉ?
Yes. We offer laboratory services including blood work, ECGs and blood pressure measurement.
What ages do you offer ADHD evaluations for?
Our evaluations are for people aged 15 to 65. Teens aged 15 to 17 are evaluated in collaboration with a parent or guardian.
Is follow-up needed after the evaluation?
Follow-up appointments are generally recommended to ensure optimal care and adjust treatment as needed. Follow-up is usually recommended after treatment begins.
Are my services reimbursed by insurance?
Most private insurers reimburse up to 80%. A receipt is provided for all our consultations and evaluations to make your claim easier.
